How Much Does a Website Cost in India? An Honest 2026 Breakdown

Ask ten developers "how much does a website cost in India" and you will get ten wildly different answers — someone on Fiverr willing to do it for the price of a pizza, and a Bangalore agency quoting the price of a small car. Both are technically making "a website". Neither is lying. They are just building very different things for very different customers.

This post is our honest attempt to explain what those different price tags actually buy you, so you can figure out where your business realistically fits before you start collecting quotes.

The four buckets that every quote falls into

Almost every website quote in India lands in one of these four brackets:

  1. DIY builder — Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, or WordPress on your own
  2. Solo freelancer using a free theme
  3. Small local agency with a custom design
  4. Metro-city agency or enterprise studio

Cost differences between the four are easily 10× to 100×. But so is the difference in what you get, in reliability, in SEO strength, and in how much of your own time you have to sink into it. Comparing across brackets is comparing apples with airplanes.

1. DIY builders

Wix, Shopify, WordPress.com — these advertise themselves as "free" but you will pay a monthly subscription for any usable plan, plus your own time (usually 40-80 hours to learn and launch a decent-looking site). For very early-stage founders testing an idea, this is honestly fine — no shame in it.

Where DIY fails: SEO out of the box is weak, page speed is mediocre, and you cannot customise beyond what the template allows. You are also renting — the day you stop paying, your website disappears. Fine for month-1 experiments, not fine for a business you plan to grow.

2. Freelancer with a free theme

You will see quotes as low as a few thousand rupees on Fiverr, Upwork or WhatsApp groups. Here is what genuinely happens at that price point:

  • A free WordPress theme is installed, logo and text swapped, site handed over
  • Zero original design work — your site looks like 500 other sites already out there
  • No SEO configuration, no schema, no analytics setup
  • Support disappears within days of handover
  • Any tiny change later (add a page, fix a typo) becomes another mini-invoice or just doesn't happen

Perfectly fine if you truly need only a "business card online". Not fine at all if you plan to actually pull customers from that website.

3. Small local agency with custom design

This is where most serious Indian small businesses land, and for good reason. You will spend meaningfully more than the freelancer route, but you get:

  • A genuinely custom design that reflects your brand and stands out
  • Real conversion thinking — where CTAs sit, how leads get captured, where WhatsApp buttons live
  • On-page SEO baked in, sitemap generated, schema markup added, Google Search Console set up
  • Google Analytics 4 and (usually) Meta Pixel configured correctly from day one
  • Mobile-first design and page-speed tuning as defaults, not upsells
  • Actual support after launch from humans who respond on WhatsApp

Timelines are usually 3-6 weeks. If you plan to run ads to the site, or want organic SEO leads to grow over 12+ months, this bracket has the strongest ROI for Indian SMBs.

4. Metro-city agency or enterprise studio

Big-name agencies in Mumbai, Bangalore or Gurgaon deliver polished work, but at 5-10× the price of a good tier-2 city agency. Unless you are a funded startup or a mid-market brand with a marketing team already in place, the return on that spend is rarely worth it for a small business in a smaller city. Their office rent is not your problem to pay.

What actually changes the price inside any bracket

Number of pages

A 5-page website is cheaper to build than a 20-page website — but for a small business trying to rank in Google, more pages usually pay back many times over. Every city + service combination you want to rank for is basically a separate page.

Custom design vs template

Custom design costs more upfront but stays fresh for 3-4 years without looking dated. A template starts looking dated in 12-18 months and often forces a full rebuild — you end up paying twice.

Features beyond simple content

Plain content pages are cheap. Online bookings, appointment slots, payment gateway integration, multilingual content, product catalogue with variants, customer login and dashboards — each of these is a real module of work. Decide which you actually need before the quote stage, otherwise scope creep will blow up the timeline and the bill.

Content creation

Who is writing the copy? If you provide finished text, the price is lower. If the agency has to interview you, write, edit and get sign-off across multiple rounds, that is genuine work and gets billed separately. Most "why did the price go up?" fights happen here — clarify upfront who is writing what.

Ongoing costs after launch

Even after the site is live, expect: domain renewal (small, annual), hosting (small-to-medium, annual), maintenance (monthly, optional but strongly recommended), and ad budget if you want traffic quickly. Any quote that only shows the one-time build cost is not showing the full picture.

Hidden charges to nail down upfront

  • SSL certificate — this should be free with any reputable host. If someone is billing separately for it, question hard.
  • Whose name is the domain in? — insist it is yours from day one.
  • Migration cost if you want to move hosting later — some builders and page-builder plugins lock you in.
  • Per-change cost after launch — get this rate in writing before you sign.
  • Content revision rounds — how many are included in the base price?
  • Image/photography — is a shoot included, or are you providing photos?

How to decide what your business should actually spend

Stop asking "what is the cheapest quote" and start asking "what will this website earn me back". A website that quietly generates 5-10 qualified leads a month is worth many times more than a cheap site that is invisible on Google. Roughly:

  • If your business earns most of its money offline through walk-ins and referrals, a lean, well-made site is enough — you don't need bells and whistles.
  • If you plan to run Google Ads or Meta Ads, invest in a proper landing-page-first website with conversion tracking. A cheap site kills the ROI on your ad spend before it even starts.
  • If you want organic Google traffic to build up over 12+ months, invest in custom SEO-first design and plan for regular content. This is the highest-ROI bucket long term.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress cheaper than a custom-coded website?

Upfront, usually yes. Long-term, not always — WordPress plugins bring monthly costs, security patching, and occasional breakage. A well-built custom site can be cheaper to run over 3 years. Depends on your requirements and your team.

Should I go with a freelancer or an agency?

For a static portfolio, brochure or personal blog, a good freelancer is fine. For a business website that will generate leads, agency wins on accountability, contracts, continuity and post-launch support. A freelancer who becomes unreachable is a common Indian SMB story.

How long does a good website take to build in India?

3-4 weeks for a simple business site with 5-8 pages. 6-8 weeks for a custom design with e-commerce or booking features. Delays are almost always on the content and photos side — the coding side is usually the fastest bit.

Do I need to renew anything every year?

Yes — your domain and your hosting renew annually. SSL is usually auto-renewed and free. Optional but recommended: a small monthly maintenance retainer for security updates, backups and small tweaks.
